Drop of a Hat Brigade Digest: Upcoming One Time Event Volunteer Opportunities
If you would like to receive the biweekly Brigade Digest as an email, please contact us at volunteer@a1aa.org.
Helping out with short-term volunteer projects alongside our friends and family can be a fun way to give back to our community and can also be a wonderful way to meet new people. With the help of the Drop of a Hat Brigade, we aim to make volunteering flexible and fun!
Past Drop of a Hat Brigade events include:
• Volunteering for a local food bank’s food drive
• Helping out at a community music festival
• Sending out a local non-profit’s newsletter
• Spending Earth Day picking up litter on the beach
• Assisting at a children’s “literacy event”
When you sign up with the Drop of a Hat Brigade, we will contact you with upcoming short-term volunteer opportunities either by email or by phone, whichever is more convenient for you. You will always have the option of saying “yes” or “no” to volunteering and we will try to contact you based on your volunteer interests, availability and geographic location.
Keep in mind…no matter how many hats you wear, you can still volunteer with the Drop of a Hat Brigade.
Share your talents and gain new experiences today! Become a Brigade member today by emailing or call 442-3711 in Humboldt or 464-7876 in Del Norte.

What a few volunteers have to say about Drop of a Hat Brigade:
Kay Burgess
Episodic volunteering fits my busy lifestyle and gives me opportunities to provide worthwhile services to our community. I enjoy social activities, such as volunteering as a “door person” at the Jazz festival, and I see many acquaintances that I wouldn't otherwise run into since I've retired. I volunteer because it satisfies my altruistic leanings; I go through the Drop-of-a-Hat program because it is ultimately flexible.Chris Wisner
I have found each experience to be remarkably fulfilling and rewarding. Whether doing clean-up and dishes for 30 people at a special event, sorting groceries at the food bank, or photographing 25 year volunteers, I am developing a great sense of community involvement. My work schedule is wide open but unpredictable. Being on call for the Volunteer Center fills in the gaps, and has allowed me to work with some very special people and make some new friends as well.Back to Top
Supporting Member Agencies
It isn’t always easy to find volunteers to help your organization meet it’s commitment to our communities. For local agencies and non-profit organizations, the Drop of a Hat Brigade is a great resource for short-term projects and one-time events. As a Supporting Member of the Volunteer Center of the Redwoods, you will have the opportunity to access the Brigade by emailing or faxing in a "Request for Drop of a Hat Brigade Volunteers" form. The sooner we receive your request, the sooner we can ask Brigade volunteers to help with your event.
Keep in mind that while people volunteer out of the goodness of their hearts, it never hurts to let them know what they will receive in return for their service. Advertising what type of snack will be provided while volunteering or sending a “thank you” letter after the event is always appreciated by volunteers. Once you have people engaged in your organization, we recommend keeping a list of volunteer’s contact information so that you may contact them directly the next time you could use a helping hand. If volunteers have a good first experience with your organization, chances are they will be back for more!
