DOORS

The DOORS Initiative (Disability Outreach Offering Resources through Service) is a program of the Volunteer Center of the Redwoods to engage and support people with disabilities, with a focus on veterans, in volunteer service. Our goal is to help improve the lives of people with disabilities through easily accessible volunteer work that promotes financial empowerment and personal satisfaction.

An individual is considered to have a “disability” if he/she has a physical or mental impairment that limits one or more major life activities (this definition is taken from the Americans with Disabilities Act).

Participants have the option of receiving “case management” style support, where a volunteer coordinator can assist with placement, follow-up, and help in accessing other resources in the community.

DOORS participants may have also have access to limited discretionary funds in the form of: mileage reimbursements to volunteer sites, job trainings, specialized equipment and other activities or devices that support them on their path to financial empowerment.
