2009 Building Green Communities Conference IV:

Local Self-Reliance ~ Plan It Green!

Help with the efforts to host the 4th Annual Building Green Communities Conference!  The theme of this year’s conference is Local Self-Reliance. This is a fast spreading, grass roots movement that is breathing life back into communities across America. Local self-reliant does not mean trying to become self-sufficient or independent. The idea is to provide and utilize as many essential goods and services as possible from local, regional, and renewable resources and to build a network of interdependent regional economies. The day will unfold with a series of hands-on workshops covering topics ranging from front yard gardening and food preservation to local economic development and green jobs training programs. The trade show/expo (50 booths) will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Enjoy this time to talk with experts and look over the local goods and services being offered. There will also be a staffed Kid’s Zone offering structured, hands-on, educational activities, music, and a parade. The finale will include a social hour, local foods banquet, and a keynote address by Tim LaSalle; the CEO of the Rodale Institute.

WHAT: Volunteers can assist Plan It Green in the following ways… Collecting donations (flowers, food, sponsor banners, etc.), Staffing the registration booth, Selling t-shirts, Staffing the coffee & tea booth; Setting up and breaking down activity areas; Equipment and A/V Technicians; and Helping to wash dishes in order to reduce event waste!!!

WHEN & WHERE: The event is Saturday, April 3rd, 2010 from 8am to 8pm at the Arcata Community Center. Several shifts are available and location depends on the work you choose to do…
