Food for People – Humboldt County Food Bank ~ recent volunteer needs…

Please see the list below of current needs… If you enjoy reaping and sharing the harvest to end hunger, call for more information on any of the following opportunities! Food for People works to eliminate hunger and improve the health and well-being of our community through access to healthy and nutritious foods, community education and advocacy.

WHAT, WHEN, WHERE:

--Gleaning volunteers gather on various days during the growing season to help harvest donated produce from local farms and gardens.  Gleanings are scheduled on an as needed basis, usually with short notice.

-- People’s Produce Market  is a free farmers market with tables set up in the food bank parking lot (307 W. 14th St, Eureka) for clients to pick up fresh produce and listen to local musicians. Volunteers are needed on the third Thursday, September 16, 11:30-2:45.

--Office Assistants are invited to write handwritten thank you notes, help with data entry and assist with paperwork at various times and days of the week

--Choice Pantry & On-Call Volunteers: We are looking for volunteers for the Choice Pantry (interviewers, shoppers’ helpers) and also volunteers who would like to be available to our Choice Pantry in on-call situations. For example, in case any scheduled volunteers are unable to come in for their regular shifts. This is a great opportunity for folks who can’t commit to a weekly or regular shift, but wouldn’t mind helping out in a pinch!  The Choice Pantry is held: Tuesdays: 10am – 3pm; Wednesdays 10am – 3pm; 2nd and 4th Thursdays: 10am –1pm & 1- 4pm; Fridays: 10am – 1pm & 1-4pm.

--Pantry Network Delivery week: 3 volunteers needed to help prepare pallets of food orders that will be delivered by our driver to Pantries throughout Humboldt County. A strong back is needed for lifting. Call for next round of deliveries to be made.

--Senior Brown Bag Program: A long- term commitment is desired for these positions, but volunteers might also be placed on a list as needed to be an occasional substitute driver or site assistant. Looking for volunteer drivers for our Senior Brown Bag program-- our Community Food Programs Coordinator maps out short, convenient routes to deliver to seniors who are unable to leave their homes to pick up their food at one of our remote sites. We are also looking for a volunteer to assist our Community Food Programs Coordinator on our deliveries to remote Senior Brown Bag distribution sites. Seniors meet us at these sites to pick up their food. This requires being able to lift at least 35-40 lbs repetitively to help load/unload the van and offer carry-out assistance to seniors’ vehicles.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:  Vehicles are usually needed for large gleaning groups, as well as Senior Brown Bag delivery.  Some lifting is required in most positions.

YOUTH FRIENDLY? Volunteers 18 years+ preferred for gleaning; children might be able to help with the Farmers Markets gleaning, however. In other cases, youth volunteers age 7-16 may assist with a parent or guardian who must fill out a Youth Consent Form.

WHO: If you’re interested in helping out for any of these opportunities, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator (temporarily Ann Jones, “AJ”) at 445-3166 or email volunteer@foodforpeople.org .

Democracy Unlimited of Humboldt County (DUHC) ~ August Volunteer Opportunities

Democracy Unlimited has a host of volunteer opportunities coming up, including ways to connect with fellow DUHCs!   Check out their list of opportunities below, or go to their website (www.duhc.org/ ) for more information…  Democracy Unlimited of Humboldt County (DUHC) educates citizens about the illegitimate seizure of our authority to govern ourselves. They design and implement grassroots strategies that exercise democratic power over corporations and governments. They seek to create a truly democratic society by provoking a non-violent popular uprising against corporate rule in Humboldt County that can serve as a model for other communities across the United States. To get involved in any of these projects, contact Democracy Unlimited! (707) 269-0984 or info@DUHC.org

Our resident lawyer, David Cobb, continues to tour the country delivering speeches and conducting community workshops toward abolishing corporate personhood! Hundreds are signing up with the Move to Amend, so if you’re handy with a keyboard - we need your help NOW! In order to effectively follow up with these interested activists, we must get these sign-up sheets into the data base. Please email info@duhc.org to keep this campaign charging ahead.

--DUHC Coffee, From Our House to Yours: Our fair trade beans are grown by Byron Corrales whose small-scale organic farm is known for producing some of the best coffee in the world. Byron is a Sandinista leader who fought against Somoza in the revolution for democracy and liberation in Nicaragua in the 1970s. We are seeking a volunteer to work with a DUHC staffer, local food stores, and other local, non-profits who also have their own coffees. The goal is to create an in-store display for these fair trade coffees whose sale supports both the amazing farmers in the Global South and the critical organizing work happening here in Humboldt. Other ideas are welcome – appreciation for world-class coffee helpful. Please email info@duhc.org or call 269-0984 to take on this fun project. http://www.duhc.org/page/democracy-unlimited-house

--For DUHCers Who Love to Talk: Help us out by tabling in your town. Summer farmer's markets are a great time to offer the community information about Democracy Unlimited and our projects. If you're a good people person, let us set you up with supplies and talking points on the Move to Amend campaign. Enjoy the great Summer weather and talk up democracy with your fellow community members!

--And as always and ongoing-Office Help: Come in for open hours and help with mailings, phone calls and data entry. If you're looking for a good busywork task (we know there are folks out there who like this kind of stuff!) this is for you. All these admin tasks are essential toward keeping the grassroots healthy! Chat with friends, meet new ones, visit with the dog and cats and help us get work done in a relaxing, friendly atmosphere. Did we mention we have punch and pie?

 Sequoia Humane Society Volunteer Orientations

First Sunday of Each Month

Learn what it takes to be a Sequoia Humane Society Pet Adoption Center Volunteer! Volunteer orientations are held once a month (unless otherwise noted) at the Sequoia Humane Society Pet Adoption Center. This is a required introduction to ongoing volunteering opportunities at the adoption center. Sequoia Humane Society promotes the humane treatment of all animals and strives to end pet overpopulation through programs such as pet adoption, spay & neuter and community education.

WHAT: The orientation lasts approximately one hour and is held on the first Sunday of each month unless otherwise noted. Orientation includes information about volunteering, a tour of the Shelter, a small training, time to fill out paperwork and receive your Volunteer Handbook for this hour. New volunteers will be paired with a staff member during their first volunteer visit (to be scheduled another day) so that volunteers receive training in safe animal handling procedures ("Buddy-Up" training).
WHEN: Orientations are held the first Sunday of each month 3:30-4:30pm, please call or email to make sure they’re happening and to sign up!

WHERE: Sequoia Humane Society Pet Adoption Center, 6073 Loma Avenue (off the King Salmon Avenue exit), Eureka.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:  Space is limited for the orientation, so please call or visit the Shelter to sign up early! For group volunteering (schools, organizations, special needs), it is best to contact or schedule a special training with the Volunteer Coordinator. For more information on these orientations and volunteering at the shelter, please call or visit the Sequoia Humane Society Volunteering web page (link below).

YOUTH FRIENDLY? All youths 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult who will also be an active SHS volunteer. No more than 2 youths per adult (some limitations may apply).
