Tis the season. Joy, peace on earth, sleigh bells jingling, chestnuts roasting, traffic jamming, amazon shipping. The mail arrives containing season’s greetings from your favorite charity and others you didn’t know existed. All need your critical year end donation. A veritable winter’s wonderland.
According to www.taxexemptworld.com, there are 1,337 nonprofits in Humboldt County with a total annual income of $781,997,824. The majority of these nonprofits do their work without paid staff, depending largely on extremely dedicated volunteers.
With the holidays upon us, we are reminded of those less fortunate. Volunteers at Food for People (FFP) are especially welcome at this time of year, as well as year-round, to help feed those in need.

Most people in Humboldt County know that it is important to think about every object before it is thrown in the trash. Is it recyclable? Is it compostable? Can it have another use?
We have a lot of wonderful people and places in our community and today I want to recognize one lady I see every day from my office window.

I spent most of October overseas. Two weeks in southern France followed by two weeks traveling around Morocco with 24 returned Peace Corps volunteers. I covered more miles in a seated position than can possibly be good for me.
