Advocacy

Area Agencies on Aging have the responsibility under the Older Americans Act to serve as the principal advocate for older adults in their communities. The Area 1 Agency on Aging is the principle advocate for older adults, caregivers, persons with disabilities and volunteers in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties.

Our advocacy activities include reviewing and taking positions on pending state and federal legislation, testifying before legislative bodies, letter writing, public speaking, media appearances and holding public hearings.

The A1AA Advisory Council, the community's principal elder advocate, meets monthly at various locations to learn about services and to talk directly with seniors and their care providers.

The duties of the Council include: assisting staff with the identification and collection of senior and caregiver needs information, holding public hearings, providing input to the development of the Area Plan for Senior Services, reviewing and taking positions on pending legislation, and suggesting ways to improve older adult services. The Council also oversees the bi-annual election of the local members to the California Senior Legislature.

There are many other senior advocacy organizations at the state and federal level. Click here for several links.
